Driving WinTech is coming to Calgary

By Rainer Kern

Women in Tech World’s Driving WinTech initiative is a community-based research tour to better understand and support women in Canada’s technology industry. We’re bringing our Community Conversations to Calgary and we want you to join in! This free event, sponsored by Volition, District Ventures and Startup Calgary, is happening on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. MDT at the Global Business Centre.

The goal of these research activities is to learn about women in tech in Calgary, and across Canada. Driving WinTech wants to define what it means to be a woman in tech, and identify best practices for inclusion of the women working in Calgary’s tech industry.

This research activity is for people who:

-Self-identify as a woman working in the tech industry (or recently left within the past five years)

-Are allies or advocates of women in tech

-Are stakeholders in the tech industry (including government, non-profit, educational organizations or service providers)

Participation in this study requires completing a short questionnaire and joining in the Community Conversation. The total time of this event will be about two and a half hours. This is an opportunity to share your stories and input, network and hear from a panel of powerful women.

Agenda:

5:30-6:00 p.m. – Networking

6:00-6:30 p.m. – Panel of Trailblazing Women in Tech

6:30-7:50 p.m. – Research Activities: Community Conversation

7:50-8:00 p.m. – Closing Questions + Next Steps

Everyone knows that we are living in an increasingly tech-enabled world. Not surprisingly, this is reflected in the number of jobs that are now available in the tech industry. The problem is, while the Computer Science workforce has grown by 60% since 1991, the percentage of young women going into the industry has declined (Stats Canada 2011). This needs to change.
